How much does biodiesel cost to produce?

The cost of producing biodiesel depends on a number of factors, however as a typical example it will cost 10-11p to produce (excluding the price of your oil).

Example: If your oil costs 20p per litre, then your biodiesel will cost you 30p per litre (approx). At the time of writing diesel is £1.25, meaning a saving of £0.95 or 76% per litre!

What other chemicals do I need… and how much?

To produce biodiesel you will need the following consumables:

  • Methanol
20L required per 100L of oil
  • Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide) or Potassium Hydroxide
1KG required per 100L of oil
  • Water (If you choose a wet wash system)
20-30L required per 100L of oil

Above figures are approximate quotations

How long does the process take?

On a wet wash cycle, the process time from start to finish is approx. 6 hours. The actual ‘hands on’ time is about 1 hour.

A dry wash process will typically take between 4 and 5 hours.

Can I use used vegetable oil to produce biodiesel?

Yes! You can use any form of vegetable oil, regardless of its state. It is possible to source free used vegetable oil from local catering venues such as fish & chip shops, schools and pubs.

What vehicles run on biodiesel?

Biodiesel can be operated in any diesel engine with little or no modification to the engine or the fuel system. Biodiesel has a solvent effect that may release deposits accumulated on tank walls and pipes from previous diesel fuel storage. The release of deposits may clog filters initially and precautions should be taken.

What is the limit on biodiesel production in the UK?

As of January 2010, each person is assigned a 2,500 litre allowance per annum on biodiesel production. You do not need to inform HMRC unless your level of production is in excess of the above quota.

Quote from

If you have produced less than
2,500 litres in the last 12 months, or if you expect to produce less
than this amount in the next 12 months, you may be an exempt producer.
If you are an exempt producer you are only required to keep production
records (see item 2 in the above table). See paragraph 4.2.1 for more

Where can I buy the chemicals needed for biodiesel production?

OneStopBioShop does not sell the chemicals needed for biodiesel
production as unfortunately it is very expensive for us to transport them nationwide. We are however able to source a local stockist to yourself, meaning you will get the best deal local to yourself.

Why should I use biodiesel?

Apart from the savings to be made from producing your own biodiesel, there are a number of reasons why you should use it.

Your diesel motor will run better and last longer on your home-made fuel, and it’s much cleaner — better for the environment and better for health.

If you make it from used cooking oil it’s not only cheap but you’ll be recycling a troublesome waste product that too often ends up in sewers and landfills instead of being recycled.

Best of all is the GREAT feeling of freedom, independence and empowerment that making your own fuel will give you.

How much can I save?

Case Example 1:

You drive 10,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg.

Total gallons of fuel used: 10,000 miles / 50 mpg = 200 gallons of fuel used.
Total UK Litres of fuel used: 200 gallons x 4.5 (litres in a gallon) = 900 litres used per year.

Today’s diesel price: £1.50
Cost of biodiesel production: £0.11
Total saving: £1.50 – £0.11 = £1.39 per litre

Total saving per annum = 900 litres x £1.39 = £1,251 saved each year!

Case Example 2:

You drive 20,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg.

Total gallons of fuel used: 20,000 miles / 50 mpg = 400 gallons of fuel used.

Total UK litres of fuel used: 400 gallons x 4.5 (litres in a gallon) = 1,800 litres used per year.

Today’s diesel price: £1.50

Cost of biodiesel production: £0.11

Total Saving: £1.50 – £0.11 = £1.39 per litre

Total saving per annum = 1,800 litres x £1.39 = £2,502 saved each year!

Case Example 3:

You drive 40,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg.

Total gallons of fuel used: 40,000 miles / 50 mpg = 800 gallons of fuel used.

Total UK litres of fuel used: 800 gallons x 4.5 (litres in a gallon) = 3,600 litres used per year.
Today’s diesel price: £1.50

Cost of biodiesel production: £0.11

Total Saving: £1.50 – £0.11 = £1.39 per litre

Total saving per annum:  3,600 litres x £1.39  = £3,780 saved each year!

All customers will receive a notification by email once their order has been dispatched from our warehouse.

Can I come and view products prior to purchase?

What is a Dry Washing system?

During biodiesel production you will need to wash your fuel to ensure all
trace elements of methanol, caustic soda, soaps, etc are all removed from your fuel.

Dry Washing
is an method of washing your fuel without the need of using water, which saves both time
and effort.

Dry Washing is aimed for customers where the following circumstances apply:

  • Want to save
    time producing their biodiesel
  • Want to produce larger volumes of
it (More than 1 batch per week)
  • Have no access to an external water source

It is important to stress that Water Washing and Dry Washing will give you the same end
result, abit like a dishwasher and the kitchen sink will both clean dishes.

We offer two Dry Washing Upgrade’s with each machine sold and they are:

  • Dry Washing Upgrade
Provides the Dry Washing equipment needed, without the filter media needed to wash the fuel. Also includes fixtures and fittings to attach the Dry Washing vessel to the BioBuddy.
  • Dry Washing Upgrade Pro
Provides all the above with the addition of 15KG of Eco2Pure to fill your Dry Washing vessel. 15KG of Eco2Pure is enough to wash 6,000L of biodiesel. Additional Eco2Pure can then be purchased from our online store.

What power does the BioBuddy need?

We also give full technical support either via email or on the telephone should you require one-2-one tuition.

You do not need to be a science technician to operate this machine, and great care has been taken to ensure that the machine is as user friendly as possible.

Is biodiesel production legal?

Yes! Each and every person in the UK is given a yearly 2,500L tax exemption by HMRC.

For more information please visit the HMRC publication on biofuel by clicking here.

What warranty do you give?

All BioBuddy units come with a 1 year warranty on all parts and materials. In the unlikely event that your unit should fail, we will arrange for collection and a replacement to be made at no extra cost to yourself.

You have the option to purchase additional warranty with selected items.

Note: We only arrange for collection from within Mainland UK.

Where is the BioBuddy made?

BioBuddy is manufactured and assembled within the UK. Great attention to detail is given to each unit that is assembled under our carefully given QA guidelines.

If it really is this easy, why isn’t everyone doing it?

The answer to this question is one I enjoy answering the most. Many people can not afford the investment needed for a biodiesel processor, others do not have the space or time. I like to compare it to making bread. It tastes so much nicer when you make it at home, much more healthy but very few people bother.

What is the minimum amount of oil I can convert?

We recommend that their is enough oil inside the machine to ensure the heater is adequately covered. Therefore we recommend a minimum batch of 40L is done in any one time.

What is the hands on time?

Each batch will take up to 6 hours, and we suggest the typical production will take 30 minutes of “hands on time”. Most of this time will be taken up preparing and mixing the chemicals.
