How much does biodiesel cost to produce? The cost of producing biodiesel depends on a number of factors, however as a typical example it will cost 10-11p to produce (excluding the price of your oil). Example: If your oil costs 20p per litre, then your biodiesel will cost you 30p per litre (approx). At the time of writing diesel is £1.25, meaning a saving of £0.95 or 76% per litre! |
What other chemicals do I need… and how much?To produce biodiesel you will need the following consumables:
Above figures are approximate quotations |
How long does the process take?On a wet wash cycle, the process time from start to finish is approx. 6 hours. The actual ‘hands on’ time is about 1 hour. A dry wash process will typically take between 4 and 5 hours. |
Can I use used vegetable oil to produce biodiesel?Yes! You can use any form of vegetable oil, regardless of its state. It is possible to source free used vegetable oil from local catering venues such as fish & chip shops, schools and pubs. |
What vehicles run on biodiesel?Biodiesel can be operated in any diesel engine with little or no modification to the engine or the fuel system. Biodiesel has a solvent effect that may release deposits accumulated on tank walls and pipes from previous diesel fuel storage. The release of deposits may clog filters initially and precautions should be taken. |
What is the limit on biodiesel production in the UK?As of January 2010, each person is assigned a 2,500 litre allowance per annum on biodiesel production. You do not need to inform HMRC unless your level of production is in excess of the above quota. Quote from hmrc.gov.uk “If you have produced less than See this publication in full here |

Why should I use biodiesel?Apart from the savings to be made from producing your own biodiesel, there are a number of reasons why you should use it. Your diesel motor will run better and last longer on your home-made fuel, and it’s much cleaner — better for the environment and better for health. If you make it from used cooking oil it’s not only cheap but you’ll be recycling a troublesome waste product that too often ends up in sewers and landfills instead of being recycled. Best of all is the GREAT feeling of freedom, independence and empowerment that making your own fuel will give you. |

How much can I save?
You drive 10,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg. Total gallons of fuel used: 10,000 miles / 50 mpg = 200 gallons of fuel used. Today’s diesel price: £1.50 Total saving per annum = 900 litres x £1.39 = £1,251 saved each year! Case Example 2: You drive 20,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg. Total gallons of fuel used: 20,000 miles / 50 mpg = 400 gallons of fuel used. Total UK litres of fuel used: 400 gallons x 4.5 (litres in a gallon) = 1,800 litres used per year. Today’s diesel price: £1.50 Cost of biodiesel production: £0.11 Total Saving: £1.50 – £0.11 = £1.39 per litre Total saving per annum = 1,800 litres x £1.39 = £2,502 saved each year! Case Example 3: Total gallons of fuel used: 40,000 miles / 50 mpg = 800 gallons of fuel used. Total UK litres of fuel used: 800 gallons x 4.5 (litres in a gallon) = 3,600 litres used per year. Cost of biodiesel production: £0.11 Total Saving: £1.50 – £0.11 = £1.39 per litre Total saving per annum: 3,600 litres x £1.39 = £3,780 saved each year! |

If it really is this easy, why isn’t everyone doing it?The answer to this question is one I enjoy answering the most. Many people can not afford the investment needed for a biodiesel processor, others do not have the space or time. I like to compare it to making bread. It tastes so much nicer when you make it at home, much more healthy but very few people bother. |
What is the minimum amount of oil I can convert? We recommend that their is enough oil inside the machine to ensure the heater is adequately covered. Therefore we recommend a minimum batch of 40L is done in any one time. |
What is the hands on time? Each batch will take up to 6 hours, and we suggest the typical production will take 30 minutes of “hands on time”. Most of this time will be taken up preparing and mixing the chemicals. |
