The cost of producing biodiesel depends on a number of factors, however as a typical example it will cost 10-11p to produce (excluding the price of your oil).
Example: If your oil costs 20p per litre, then your biodiesel will cost you 30p per litre (approx). At the time of writing diesel is £1.25, meaning a saving of £0.95 or 76% per litre!

To produce biodiesel you will need the following consumables:
- Methanol
20L required per 100L of oil
- Caustic Soda
1KG required per 100L of oil
- Water (If you choose a wet wash system)
20-30L required per 100L of oil Above figures are approximate quotations
|
|
 |
On a wet wash cycle, the process time from start to finish is approx. 6 hours. The actual 'hands on' time is about 1 hour.
A dry wash process will typically take between 4 and 5 hours.

Biodiesel can be operated in any diesel engine with little or no modification to the engine or the fuel system. Biodiesel has a solvent effect that may release deposits accumulated on tank walls and pipes from previous diesel fuel storage. The release of deposits may clog filters initially and precautions should be taken.

As of January 2010, each person is assigned a 2,500 litre allowance per annum on biodiesel production. You do not need to inform HMRC unless your level of production is in excess of the above quota. Quote from hmrc.gov.uk "If you have produced less than
2,500 litres in the last 12 months, or if you expect to produce less
than this amount in the next 12 months, you may be an exempt producer.
If you are an exempt producer you are only required to keep production
records (see item 2 in the above table). See paragraph 4.2.1 for more
information."

OneStopBioShop does not sell the chemicals needed for biodiesel
production as unfortunately it is very expensive for us to transport them nationwide. We are however able to source a local stockist to yourself, meaning you will get the best deal local to yourself.

OneStopBioShop.co.uk is not currently liable for VAT, therefore the price you see is the price you pay - no VAT will be added!

Apart from the savings to be made from producing your own biodiesel, there are a number of reasons why you should use it.
Your diesel motor will run better and last longer on your home-made fuel, and it's much cleaner -- better for the environment and better for health.
If you make it from used cooking oil it's not only cheap but you'll be recycling a troublesome waste product that too often ends up in sewers and landfills instead of being recycled.
Best of all is the GREAT feeling of freedom, independence and empowerment that making your own fuel will give you.

Example 1:
You drive 10,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg.
Total Gallons of Fuel Used: 10,000 / 50 = 200 Gallons Total UK Litres of Fuel Used: 200 x 4.5 = 900 Litres
Todays Diesel Price: £1.15 Cost of Biodiesel Production: £0.10 Total Saving: £1.15 - £0.10 = £1.05 Per Litre
Total Saving Per Annum = 900 x £1.05 = £945
Example 2:
You drive 20,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg.
Total Gallons of Fuel Used: 20,000 / 50 = 400 Gallons
Total UK Litres of Fuel Used: 400 x 4.5 = 1800 Litres
Todays Diesel Price: £1.15
Cost of Biodiesel Production: £0.10
Total Saving: £1.15 - £0.10 = £1.05 Per Litre
Total Saving Per Annum = 1800 x £1.05 = £1,890
Example 3
You drive 40,000 miles per annum and your vehicle has a fuel consumption of 50mpg.
Total Gallons of Fuel Used: 40,000 / 50 = 800 Gallons
Total UK Litres of Fuel Used: 800 x 4.5 = 3600 Litres
Todays Diesel Price: £1.15
Cost of Biodiesel Production: £0.10
Total Saving: £1.15 - £0.10 = £1.05 Per Litre
Total Saving Per Annum: 3600 x £1.05 = £3,780

During biodiesel production you will need to wash your fuel to ensure all
trace elements of methanol, caustic soda, soaps, etc are all removed from your fuel.
Dry Washing
is an method of washing your fuel without the need of using water, which saves both time
and effort.
Dry Washing is aimed for customers where the following circumstances apply:
- Want to save
time producing their biodiesel
- Want to produce larger volumes of
it (More than 1 batch per week)
- Have no access to an external water source
It is important to stress that Water Washing and Dry Washing will give you the same end
result, abit like a dishwasher and the kitchen sink will both clean dishes. We offer two Dry Washing Upgrade's with each machine sold and they are: - Dry Washing Upgrade
Provides the Dry Washing equipment needed, without the filter media needed to wash the fuel. Also includes fixtures and fittings to attach the Dry Washing vessel to the BioBuddy.
- Dry Washing Upgrade Pro
Provides all the above with the addition of 15KG of Eco2Pure to fill your Dry Washing vessel. 15KG of Eco2Pure is enough to wash 6,000L of biodiesel. Additional Eco2Pure can then be purchased from our online store.
